Hosam’s been busy lately. As the lead designer for the MacKown Dental Clinic project at Lackland AFB, Hosam flew to San Antonio to officially receive the USAF Honor Award for the project from Major General Timothy A. Byers.

The 55,617 GSF facility is going to be a true icon on the base and is still on track for an early 2012 completion, along with LEED Gold certification.

Hosam Habib is AIA KC’s Volunteer of the Year

Our very own Hosam Habib was presented with the Volunteer of the Year Award from The American Institute of Architects Kansas City Chapter last night and we couldn’t be more proud. The award was given for his “outstanding dedication and contribution to the advancement of the AIA Kansas City Chapter” but he didn’t do it alone. Staff members Michael Goslinga and Andrew Cortez pitched in quite a bit of their spare time to help him create an ambitious program.

Hosam, Michael and Andrew worked together to create a 12-part series on healthcare architecture and programming for beginning-level architects. The program included six classroom sessions and six on-site visits to hospitals and laboratories.

Not only did the series sell out, but there was even a waiting list. Feedback from the participants was overwhelmingly positive and there is already planning underway for an intermediate-level series in early 2012, as well as other category-specific series.

The official nomination recognizes Hosam’s dedication, expertise, and enthusiasm – qualities we see in him every day.

United Way Week Is A Hit!

The final numbers are in and we’re proud to announce we raised nearly $14,000 for the United Way! Last week’s United Way Week, on top of being a whole lot of fun, ended up with a 13% increase in donations from last year’s totals. This counts funds raised through payroll deductions and a whole range of games and contests, most of them based on reality TV and game shows from the last 30 years.

And what’s a theme week without costumes? It didn’t hurt that United Way Week fell right before Halloween, but we’ve never had a problem getting into it. The casts of That ’70s Show, Gilligan’s Island, The Amazing Race, American Idol, The Bachelor, Grey’s Anatomy and even the Jetsons made an appearance at our wrap-up party.

This could change everything for the Argentine neighborhood

There is no mistaking that the new Argentine Library is going to become a centerpiece of the neighborhood when it opens in 2012. In an area that has seen its share of challenges, the library will provide an architectural icon and a focal point for the whole neighborhood. Replacing an aging and outdated facility, the new library will be flooded with natural light, flexible in its configurations and wired for today’s technology.

The Argentine Library is funded by the Kansas City, Kansas school system, but will be open as a resource and a centerpiece for the whole community. Inside, there will be something for everyone – study areas, flexible stacks, conference rooms, art areas, a children’s story time area and even a community room.

Hoefer Wysocki Architects continues to grow its staff. Over the past four months, we have made the following hires:

Sean Leiker has joined Hoefer Wysocki Architects’ Public Safety group. Sean has 11 years of architectural experience, primarily on public safety facilities, and is a graduate of Kansas State University’s College of Architecture, Planning & Design.

Josh Conard is a 2009 graduate of the Kansas State Masters program. He has had an internship with Clark Enersen Partners and spent the Spring 2008 semester studying in Italy. Josh will be working primarily as part of the Healthcare group.

Brando Uloho received his Master of Architecture degree from the University of Kansas. In addition to studying in Germany, Brandon has also assisted in the generation of design proposals with one of his professors for the city of Cairo. Brandon will be focused on healthcare and commercial projects.

Eric Rush has joined Hoefer Wysocki Architects as a Construction Administrator. Over the past 22 years, Eric has served in leadership positions for the construction of the Bartle Hall Expansion, Arrowhead Stadium renovations and Zona Rosa development. Eric is a registered architect and graduate of Kansas State University.

Shannon Ellingson has joined Hoefer Wysocki Architects as an Interior Designer. She has over five years of experience as an Interior Designer in the Kansas City area and is currently working on several healthcare projects.

Donnie Gillespie is a licensed architect and comes to us from HMN where he served in a Design/PA role on many healthcare projects. Donnie is a Kansas State University graduate with more than a decade of experience on healthcare and commercial projects. He will be contributing primarily to the firm’s Healthcare group as a Project Architect.

Joan Allen has joined Hoefer Wysocki Architects as an Interior Designer. Joan has six years of interior design experience and is a Certified Interior Designer with the National Council for Interior Design Qualification. She is a graduate of the University of Kansas and will be focusing primarily on healthcare projects.

Mary Abner has joined Hoefer Wysocki Architects as an Interior Designer, primarily in our Healthcare group. Mary has spent the past seven years designing interior spaces for healthcare and sporting facilities. She is a Kansas State University graduate and Certified Interior Designer with the National Council for Interior Design Qualification.

Ashley Joerger was hired as a Marketing Coordinator in June. Ashley graduated in May from Kansas State University with a degree in Journalism and Mass Communication, specializing in Public Relations. Ashley originally came to us as an Intern in the summer of 2010.

Janice Pancake rejoins the team handling a variety of administrative tasks. Janice previously worked for Hoefer Wysocki Architects as a Receptionist.

The Shawnee Mission Birth Center is underway

You may have seen the ceremonial groundbreaking in the news, but Shawnee Mission Medical Center has begun construction of a $42 million birth center, which Hoefer Wysocki designed to help them remain the area’s first choice for maternity programs.

The new center is expected to be three times as large as Shawnee Mission Medical Center’s existing birth unit and is expected to open in early 2013. It’ll have 19 labor and delivery rooms, 36 private postpartum rooms and a 24-bed Level III neonatal intensive care unit. Altogether, the unit will be able to care for as many as 30 babies at once and handle 5,000 births a year.

MacKown Dental Clinic recieves Honor Award

Hoefer Wysocki Architects is the 2011 Honor Award winner in Concept Design given by the United States Air Force (USAF) for the MacKown Dental Clinic project. This project will be a complete replacement of the MacKown Dental Clinic at Lackland Air Force Base in Texas. The 55,617 GSF facility will provide for dental care, dental laboratory capabilities, support spaces and graduate education programs. The entire facility is on track to exceed LEED Gold certification and is planned to be construction complete in the first quarter of 2012.

Hoefer Wysocki Architects Hosts Blood Drive

Hoefer Wysocki Architects held a blood drive along with the Community Blood Center on January 14th. We had a total of 46 people that registered to donate blood, and out of these 46, we received 35 pints! We nearly tripled our previous drive results - 13 pints in 2009. Hoefer Wysocki Architects’ Birthing Center project located at Shawnee Mission Medical Center was featured in the KCBJ on January 21, 2011. HWA was chosen to reinvent how women’s services are delivered, after a long and successful relationship with SMMC and a track record of exceptional design. Although Shawnee Mission Medical Center has long been at the forefront of women’s needs, the advancement of their facilities will allow them to reinvent their services and provide a warm and hospitable experience, with little-to-no trace of the way clinical healthcare had been provided in the past. Working from the recently completed master plan, HWA worked with the hospital towards the decision to stay with the present operation model. The addition and renovation will include 26 new labor and delivery rooms, 41 post-partum rooms and 25 neonatal intensive-care unit rooms. For the full article, click here.

Hoefer Wysocki Architects Participates in Canstruction

Hoefer Wysocki Architects partnered with McCown Gordon Construction for the annaul Canstruction event that took place on Wednesday, January 12th at Ward Parkway Center. Our design of a giant chess board with assorted chess pieces was awarded the People’s Choice Honorable Mention.

Canstruction, Inc. is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that holds annual design and build competitions to construct fantastic, giant sized, structures made entirely out of canned food. In each city after the structures are built and the winners declared the creations go on view to the general public as giant art exhibits. At the close of the competitions all of the food used in the structures is donated to the local food banks for distribution to community emergency feeding programs (Visit www.canstruction.org for more information).

David will be assisting with our federal, state, and local development opportunities in both the municipal and judicial sectors. Hoefer Wysocki Volunteers at We Care Event

Hoefer Wysocki Architects participated in the We Care event on December 9th at the Boys & Girls Club in Kansas City, Missouri. The event was a holiday gathering for children in need. The celebration included a variety of craft stations where children could create holiday gifts for family and friends. Hoefer Wysocki was partnered with Women in Design and helped the children make reindeer antlers. This was a great event, and we plan to particpate again next year.

Whiteman AFB Communications Facility Now Open

A ribbon cutting for the Whiteman Air Force Base Communications Facility took place on December 17, 2010. The building is a 37,750 SF, two-story structure with a one-story maintenance bay at the rear and is attached to the existing single-story communications building by an enclosed breezeway. The building contains spaces for telecommunications, data processing, document staging, duplicating center, base supplies and equipment storage, audiovisual, network control center and vault, network training center and multi media center, and expanded video teleconference capabilities. The Hoefer Wysocki team received an OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE REVIEW from the base!

Ribbon Cutting for the Fort Bliss Soldier Family Care Center

A ribbon cutting for the Fort Bliss Consolidated Family Care/Troop Medical Clinic took place on December 15, 2010. This 144,000 SF facility is the largest free-standing medical clinic in the Army. This was a design-build project that began in 2008 and was construction complete in November of 2010.

Key Facts:

41,000 1^st Armored Division soldiers and family members will utilize the clinic
45,000 beneficiaries will be enrolled at the clinic
$8.2 million worth of equipment was purchased, inspected and installed
88 exam rooms and 44 provider offices were built within the facility
5-window pharmacy is expected to provide over 2,600 prescriptions daily
2 state-of-the-art digital x-ray machines were installed

Hoefer Wysocki Architects was featured in the November 12-16, 2010 edition of the Kansas City Business Journal along with JE Dunn Construction. The article discusses the success of the JE Dunn+HWA National Healthcare Design-Build Team in securing $120 million in federal contracts. In 2008, the JE Dunn+HWA Team was one of three teams selected for the Multiple Award Task Order Contract (MATOC) for Construction and Design Build for the U.S. Air Force Medical Service, U.S. Army Medical Command, and other departments of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Through this MATOC program, our team has been awarded 5 of the 12 projects that have been released. This MATOC has $720 million available in funding through the 2014 expiration date, and our team has secured nearly 50% of the $250 million in work released to date. These projects include the Ehrling Berquist Medical/Dental Clinic at Offutt Air Force Base in Nebraska, the 436th Medical Group Clinic at Dover Air Force Base in Delaware, and at Lackland Air Force Base in Texas, the MacKown Dental Clinic, the Ambulatory Care Center and Central Energy Plant, and the Ambulatory Care Center Parking Garage.

Another Project Win at Fort Bliss

Just as construction for the Fort Bliss Consolidated Family Care/Troop Medical Clinic wrapped up, Hoefer Wysocki Architects secured the Health and Dental Clinic project located on the east side of this military base. This 39,000 SF Clinic will house outpatient medical and dental treatment functions, serving Active Duty Soldiers and family members. Design services on the project have begun, and construction is expected to be complete in mid-to-late 2012.

Hoefer Wysocki Architects Wins Leawood Justice Center Project

Hoefer Wysocki Architects has been awarded the Leawood Justice Center project, which is to be located in our new backyard at 117th and Tomahawk Creek Parkway. The project will include a two-story facility plus lower level of approximately 60,000 gross square feet on a 12-acre site. The new building will house the City of Leawood’s Police Department, the Municipal Court and Legal Department, and the Information Services Department. HWA is excited to perform architectural services for our new neighbors. The project is expected to be completed around 2013.

Kansas City Police Department Breaks Ground on the South Patrol Station

The new South Patrol Station for the Kansas City, Missouri Police Department is underway after the October 28th ground breaking. The new facilities, located at Bannister Road and Marion Park Drive in South Kansas City, will house the South Patrol and Special Operations divisions, a multi-purpose building, two vehicle storage buildings with a fueling site, and space for the Canine Unit. Construction is planned to be complete in late 2012 or early 2013. Among those in attendence were elected officials, members of the Board of Police Commissioners, and staff members of the City Architect’s Office and Capital Improvements Unit.
